I have had the distinct privilege this year to speak about our American history and about the two most important documents in our country, the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.
The Declaration is Independence is often referred to as our birth certificate, but it is also the foundation of who we are as a people. This document not only established that we would
assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle” us,
but it also established who we are with those 56 most important words in our history:
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.”
In order to properly understand our Constitution, it is imperative to understand the Declaration of Independence and the 27 reasons “which impel(ed) them to the separation” with Great Britain. If we wish to continue to be a free and self-governing country, then it is also imperative that we understand our Constitution and that we restrict our government officials to governing inside the boundaries that we have set for them in the Constitution.
Since October, 2010, I have been speaking regularly on American history, the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. I call this series of seminars “A Constitutional Conversation.”
